The web, ethics and my moral dilemma – Updated

Recently I was emailed an offer of work. The only problem is the objective of site in question differed from my own moral ideals. I would rather not say what the site is (as I may still avalues-stockxpertcom-id322267-size01-thumb.jpgccept the job) but it does raise an interesting question about whether my personal feelings on the subject should affect my decision about whether or not to accept the work.

I should clarify that it’s nothing illegal and the idea is definitely a good one. But I wonder whether I would feel guilty about working on something which I clearly disagree with? Should I try to influence the client to think my way or simply accept what s/he instructs me to do and do it? If I do blindly follow the spec will I be offering a worse service than I ordinarily would, as I would be cutting out my role as a consultant in an advisory capacity.

I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer to these questions but I will keep you posted about what I do.

-Update: I didn’t accept the job but for reasons other than my morale dilemma. Certainly made me think though.
