Beanstalk, FogBugz and Getting Started With Subversion — UPDATED
So with my latest project I’ve decided to try out versioning. This is the idea of saving a copy of every change you make to a document so that you can roll back to a previous version if something goes wrong. It’s something i’ve liked the idea of for a while now but never really applied to a project. So I’ve just signed up with Beanstalk (www.beanstalkapp.com) and FogBugz (www.fogbugz.com).
Beanstalk
Beanstalk is an online subversion repository which promises to ‘put a human face on version control‘. Basically I opted for a nice user interface and integration with project management management software ‘Fogbugz’.
It competes with other services such as Springloops (www.springloops.com). Both do essentially the same thing and minor feature differences separate the two.
FogBugz
FogBugz sells itself as a project management system. Its features include:
- Task Management
- Evidence Based Scheduling
- and Bug Tracking
The best bit about this solution is a little known offer for students and new startups - whicch can only be found here.
I should mention FogBugz is not related to subversion in any way except that ‘each commit in Beanstalk can be associated with a particular case in FogBugz’.
TortoiseSVN
TortoiseSVN (http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/) is a nice GUI for Windows and Subversion. Once you’re installed it’s a simple matter of right clicking and selecting ’SVN Checkout’. From there you enter your url given to you by Beanstalk on the right of your repository page and you’re away!
I will try to post/update this entry as I experiment with the two.
– Update–
Beanstalk recently moved to the latest version of Subversion. I do not know if the above is still relevant and am unable to find out if TortoiseSVN still works whilst at uni (the Uni internet runs through a HTTP proxy). I will investigate at a later date but until then please do not assume the above is accurate.
